Luxury Hotel Review: Goldener Hirsch, Salzburg

The Goldener Hirsch, or golden stag in Salzburg, Austria

Location, Location, Location. This hotel is on the main street (Getreidegasse), due to the fact that it’s been around since 1407! But don’t let the date of  this traditional inn style hotel fool you, this is a deluxe property in Salzburg. The original antiques, handmade furniture, and native rag rugs are opulent and discreet, and honor 600 years of hotel history. Absolutely unique for a hotel in Salzburg. After the waltzes and crystal chandeliers of Vienna, Salzburg has rustic charm and is decorated with antlers, reminding you that you are in Bavaria. The stair cases that lead to some of the 65 guest rooms and 4 suites can be a little challenging, but they do offer a small elevator.  They are widely known for having attentive and friendly service. They have received numerous awards for it, and I found it to be very true. Stepping out the front door you are smack in the middle of the pedestrian street for shopping and dining. Don’t forget that the schnapps store and the tasting room is right next door, and Carpe Diem (bar & restaurant) owned by Red Bull is kitty corner.

Fun fact: Salzburg gets its name from the Salz, (or Salt River) the ancient salt mines in the mountains outside the city used to bring salt down to the city on a river barge.
