Sugar beaches, charming island flavor, hospitable locals, and fresh seafood all can be found on the unspoiled island of Anguilla.
The imposing palm lined drive offers a stately entry to the gorgeous Malliouhana, an Auberge Resort. Inside you will be welcomed with the essence of elegance in very spacious rooms that include balconies with hammock-type chairs for afternoon siestas, as well as table and chairs for morning coffee or sipping cocktails while watching the fiery sunset. There is also the fabulous service on property, with facilities including a fitness area, kids play area, two infinity pools, one for adults, a trendy bar, and the magnificent Mead Bay Beach, to name a few. In line with the British influence they also include afternoon tea, with small sandwiches, scones, tasty snacks, and multiple tea options.
Our stay at this exquisite property was enhanced by the food at the restaurant, offering unique specials and incredible flavors. Of course, fresh seafood is a “given” for evening dining. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and was included in our room rate and for or an additional cost you can have scrumptious hot breakfast choices. The delicious food options, along with the covered open air restaurant where you can listen to the waves drumming the sandy beach makes a great way to start the day.
Speaking of beaches, Malliouhana overlooks Meads Bay Beach, said to be one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Though the beach, itself, is public, it is quite private and the sand is like silk. From time to time you may see tourists wander down past the famous tamarind tree. However, there are very few footprints encountered on a walk from one end of the bay to the other.
Snorkeling is quite good from shore, where there is coral right below the resort. You can go sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and paddle boarding which are all included. The beach staff is beyond amazing at Malliouhana, offering ice water, sunscreen and warm smiles to their guests.
The property itself is very well run and the housekeeping staff, wait staff, reception and shop staff are all polite and welcoming. The concierge will help with transportation to Shoal Bay East or other locations for additional snorkeling and beach options. There are restaurants within easy walking distance for different dining options, including the famous Beach Shack, which should not be missed.
Fly from San Juan to Anguilla or take a ferry from St. Martin, but don’t miss this very special piece of paradise tucked quietly into the Caribbean.
